Yellowstone River and YNP Fishing Report- It's On!
Yes, things are looking very good out there right now! Our rivers are dropping into shape and clearing up. It is time to start floating the Yellowstone River! We have been busy fishing in the Park since June 1st. The Firehole and Gibbon Rivers are still great options, but some of our northern rivers are now coming into play, as well! The Gardner River is still a little high but clear. If you like to scramble over rocks and fish pocket water, now is the time on the Gardner! The Lamar valley creeks and rivers are still running high and dark, but they should start to clear up in the next few weeks!
YNP Fishing Report
The Firehole still has tons on PMDs flying around. If you head down there, try to get a spot above Biscuit Basin where the water is cooler.
The Gibbon River in the canyon section is fishing very well. Lots of caddis out there. Fish a dry/dropper rig through the riffles absent a hatch.
The Yellowstone in the Grand Canyon is clear and currently fishing well beneath the surface. Salmonflies and Golden Stones will be there any day!
The Gardner River is on. Fish a short leader and move fast. Any spot that looks like it could hold a fish probably does. Cast to it!
Small creeks- More and more are coming into play. Go out on a adventure!
Float Trips
The Yellowstone River is ready to float! As of today, the Yellowstone is right at 10,000 cfs. This is still a little big, but the visibility is good. We are using mainly sub-surface tactics for the next few days with some dries sprinkled in. Fish the banks; they are hungry. By this weekend the River should be in full-swing. Salmonflies are coming very soon!
We will be fishing the river mainly up-stream from Emigrant as it is clearer right now. Nymph with rubber-legs or cast a Chubby/Rubby right up against the bank and in the slower water.
We have our first 2 Boulder River trips this week. It is clear, a little high. Give Sweetcast Angler , in Big Timber, a call for the most recent log jam update.
If you are floating on your own, be careful on all of our rivers. They are big and powerful. Give yourself lots of time to move around out there.
COVID-19 Update
Montana is doing a lot of surveillance testing. The Park County Health Department just ran 1000+ tests in Gardiner and Livingston to establish a baseline for our local population. If you feel sick, contact them and you can get a test immediately.
We are encouraging guests to drive themselves when possible on trips to increase social distancing. When guests must ride with guides for greater than 8-15 minutes, guides will buff or mask-up in the trucks and keep the windows down when possible. Clients are encouraged to do so as well.
All guide’s trucks are being cleaned and sanitized after every trip. We have lots of hand sanitizer.
We are sticking to our 14 day cancellation policy. We want people to book with confidence knowing we are currently living in a new normal.
Our fish and wildlife don’t seem to be affected by the pandemic; actually, they seem to enjoy having fewer people here!
If you are planning a trip to Yellowstone Country, give us a call! We would love to take you on a fishing trip with one of our expert Yellowstone Fishing Guides or answer any questions you may have. There are WAY fewer people in the Park and on the rivers right now than normal for this time of year. See you in Montana!
