Hoppers Are Out!

Yellowstone River Outfitters

Here is a quick Yellowstone area fishing report from the past few weeks. It has been great FISHING out there! The YELLOWSTONE River is currently flowing at about 4,500 cfs… which is a good flow. We have been taking float trips on many different stretches of the river; it has fished best on CLOUDY days. There has been some much appreciated rain and clouds over the past few days which has had the fish looking up! We had a busy July and look forward to the fishing staying strong through August and September. Guests have been visiting and Enjoying our LAst Best place safely and responsibly.

Yellowstone River conditions and tactics

Fun in the Sun on the Yellowstone RIver!

Fun in the Sun on the Yellowstone RIver!

The Yellowstone RIver is currently fishing very well right now; The Salmonfly season was great. WE have now transitioned into smaller stoneflies and hoppers. There are tons of grasshoppers bouncing around our banks. Early in the morning look for mayflies and a speckling of caddis, but the main caddis event is in the later afternoon/evenings. When fishing a hopper, feel free to drop a medium to small nymph off the back. We EXPECT these conditions to continue for the next couple of weeks. The River is running at about 75% of its’ average flow for this time of year. This means that the latter half of August could come with warmer temps and earlier/later start times. If you are fishing the Yellowstone, don’t hesitate to contact us for the most recent fishing conditions!

Got wildflowers?

Got wildflowers?

  • Slough creek is clear and there are CONSISTENT PMD and Drake hatches. If it is windy (LIKELY) look for hoopers, ants, and other TERRESTRIAL being blown off the banks.

  • The Lamar has been fishing well with TERRESTRIALS and good drifts. Look out for the bison!

  • The Gardiner RIver is currently flowing at 150 cfs. Fish fast and use a short leader. Soon, when the water warms up, focus your efforts above the boiling River.

  • The firehole River is low and hot. We will be revisiting this shoulder season fishery again in September!

  • Soda Butte and other Lamar TRIBUTARIES are clear, cold, and ready to fish. Don’t forget your bear Spray!
