general information
Where We Fish in Montana
We are a small, tightly-knit guiding service in the heart of Montana trout country. Our guides have an intimate knowledge of these waters and a real passion for the place, and our job is to share that with every angler who books with us. At YRO, we have the flexibility to build a trip around what you want to fish, the kind of day you want to have, and the conditions on a given week. We will take you where we don't see many other anglers, and we will customize the trip as the day unfolds.
Because of our small size, we can switch a float trip to a Yellowstone Park walk and wade (or vice versa) at a moment's notice if it means putting you on better water for the day. Below is an overview of the waters we guide. Click into any of them for details on each fishery.
-
We float the entire Yellowstone River, but we specialize in the "upper river," the stretch that runs from the park boundary in Gardiner, MT down through Emigrant. This stretch sees less pressure than the lower river, and the fish rarely see flies.
Two sections require rafts and guides with expert whitewater experience: Yankee Jim Canyon and the Schoolhouse rapids right in Gardiner. Our guides run both regularly. Float trips on the Yellowstone work for anglers of all skill levels.
-
Our Yellowstone National Park walk and wade trips are some of the most rewarding fishing we offer. The park is home to native Yellowstone cutthroat trout, grayling, wild brook trout, and more. Hike a few miles off the road and you generally have the water to yourself, with no crowds and no other anglers in sight.
We mainly fish the north and northeastern sections of the park, where there are endless streams and lakes to explore. Tell us what kind of experience you're after, and our guides will plan an adventure around it.
-
The spring creeks of Paradise Valley (DePuy, Armstrong, and Nelson) are technical, gin-clear waters where trophy trout sip tiny mayflies and have seen every fly in the box. These trips reward patient, careful anglers and fish well year-round. Advance booking is required for rod fees on the creeks.
-
We have access to exclusive private lakes for anglers who want to target trophy trout in a quieter setting. These are stillwater trips that hold rainbows and browns well into the double digits, away from the crowds you'll find on public water.
-
Beyond the Yellowstone, we guide the Boulder River and other Montana tributaries for anglers who want to fish on foot in smaller, more intimate water. Expect pocket water, dry-fly fishing, and wild trout in country that sees a fraction of the pressure of the main river.
